About the Graduate School |
|
Among the many changes in the British educational system over recent years has been the rise and rise of graduate education.
Once a minority interest, relevant to only a few professional students, the Master’s degree has become a much respected and highly desirable qualification which reflects its holder’s advanced professional training or specialist knowledge and ability in a more closely defined area of study. If a Bachelor’s degree builds into students the necessary critical skills and imparts to them the information they need for a broad, general understanding of their discipline, it is really at Master’s level that they begin to engage seriously with scholarship in a precise and detailed way. Master’s degrees today are an effective preparation for doctoral research, but also quality free-standing qualifications which can open additional doors for employment.
Mattersey Hall Graduate School offers so much more than a degree programme – we embody a whole academic culture, which provides a coherent research focus, facilitates improved staff-student interaction and networking and enables more efficient administrative management, resulting in a vastly enhanced student experience at both academic and personal levels. Our Graduate School operates in close cooperation with the School of Theology and Religious Studies at Bangor University, which awards all our degrees, including MA, MTh, MPhil, PhD and DMin, as well as our postgraduate certificates and diplomas. If you require any further information about our course offerings, please email us at the address graduateschool@matterseyhall.co.uk. We will be pleased to help you!

In partnership with Bangor University, Mattersey Hall introduced a Distance Learning BTh (Hons) degree in the winter of 2007. This UK-validated degree is made up of 18 modules (20 credits each), which are offered on a part-time basis (3-4 modules per year) over a 4-6 year period. This degree is designed to provide advanced education and training for those in ministry such as pastors, missionaries or church leaders who can’t leave their families, work and ministry to pursue a residential degree. Credits from other institution can be transferred into the first and second levels of the degree if they meet certain qualifications determined by the college and Bangor University. A transfer fee may be added to non-Global University or Mattersey Hall students. See payment details.
The curriculum for the three levels of the BTh programme is as follows:

Mattersey Hall offers a range of different taught Master’s programmes, including both MA and MTh degrees. All these require the completion of four modules, examined ordinarily in each case by a 5,000 word essay, and a dissertation of approximately 20,000 words.
A number of different teaching strategies are employed in these courses, including directed learning, seminars, workshops, field trips and group presentations as well as formal lectures. All our teaching staff are highly-qualified and respected academics, but experienced, active practitioners who understand the real-world implications of their teaching and are as interested as you will be in the practical, everyday application of the new skills, knowledge and abilities you will gain in working toward your qualification.

Dealing with key issues such as mentoring and personal development, organisational growth and management, advanced leadership skills, change management, and other related issues, this programme functions much like an Executive MBA in style and culture, being delivered over five short residential seminar sessions a year for two years in an up-market hotel in the city of Sheffield as well as at Mattersey Hall.

The DMin degree as offered at Mattersey Hall comprises a taught component and a dissertation of approximately 50,000 words (which will be defended at a viva). It is ordinarily available as a three to four year part time programme only. Candidates for this programme who already hold an appropriate and relevant Master's degree will complete just two taught modules, in Research in Ministry and Research Design, and then undertake research ordinarily in a practical area of ministry. Supervision for the thesis will be provided by a team of staff from Mattersey Hall and the process will be supported with regular group tutorials throughout the year. Admission for this course is in September each year. |
